1 Plymouth State Home and Training School, Northville, Michigan

A survey of 1,077 mentally retarded residents of Plymouth State Home and Training School for the distribution of Australia (hepatitis-associated) antigen and precipitins to this antigen revealed that karyotypically normal females show a much lower prevalence of the antigen than do the males, whereas among young G-trisomic patients the females as well as males show a high prevalence of the antigen. Early age of institutionalization increases the risk of becoming an Australia antigen carrier, but less so in karyotypically normal females than in other groups.
