I am obliged to take issue with the recommendation of the Committee on Nutrition that all babies be fed iron fortified milk throughout the first year. I refer you to the Committee Report published in Pediatrics,1 in which a more reasonable policy is outlined. The Committee recommends and I quote directly, "The most effective way to prevent iron deficiency on a large scale is by an iron fortified dietary staple which can be begun by 6 weeks of age for infant consumption.
