If we define nutritional iron deficiency on the basis of a hemoglobin level less than 10 gm per 100 ml, the incidence of this deficiency state among infants of middle-upper socioeconomic groups appears to range from 3 to 8%.1-3 In a nutritional survey of children 1 to 6 years of age composited to resemble the U.S., Owen and co-workers found the incidence of nutritional iron deficiency among infants 12 to 23 months of age to be 6%.4
