Expiration Date on Biologicals: Report of Dr. Katz for the Infectious Disease Committee

Samuel L. Katz M.D.1

1 Committee on Infectious Diseases

Dr. Johnson's problem1 is both real and perplexing. I am afraid the solution is not as simple as requesting that the United States "adopt similar devices" because, to my knowledge, they do not exist. Those to which he refers, used in the testing of autoclave efficacy, depend on exposure to steam for their activation. The lability to heat and light of viral vaccines and other such biologic products is much more delicate and individually variable than that and, to my knowledge, no one has yet devised suitable indicator mechanisms.
