Excerpt XVII: Playing with Fire

The illustration in the lesson below shows how easy it was in 1830 for children to be burned when playing near open fireplaces. This was particularly true for girls who wore long, cotton dresses and aprons. In the 1830's, the high flammability of cotton cloth, especially when worn in the loose flowing style depicted below, must have caused many serious childhood burns.1
