In a Letter to the Editor of Pediatrics,1 Doctors Hillman and Fraser reported two cases of lobster claw abnormality which they tentatively linked with cyclamate consumption during pregnancy. In an attempt to investigate the likelihood of this phenomenon we used transparent Zebra Fish (Brachyrerio danio) eggs. This organism was chosen because it: was a vertebrate; enabled large numbers of individuals to be tested; and had a development time of about 72 hours. Four hundred eggs were exposed to buffered 1% cyclamate solution from the two cell stage to hatching.
