This is Professor Brambell's fulfillment of a long-cherished desire; he had wanted to write this monograph for many years, only to be diverted by committee and advisory obligations that are frequently required of a man of his stature. When, at last, he found a year's respite after full retirement from the Department of Zoology, University College of North Wales, and at a time when many might have let the dream remain just that, the book was born–and a fine book it is.
