Wanted: Reports of Lithium Babies

Morton R. Weinstein M.D.1, Michael D. Goldfield M.D.1, and James N. Woody M.D.2

1 401 Parnassus Avenue, San Francisco, California 94122
2 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts 02115

Woody, London, and Wilbanks recently described an instance of lithium toxicity in a newborn.1 This infant had been the subject of an earlier article by Wilbanks, et al.2 While we strongly endorse the cautions both articles recommend in giving lithium to pregnant women,3 we believe that some of the conclusions the reader might draw from these reports could be misleading, and that certain additional facts should be called to the attention of your readers without delay.
