I read with pleasure Dr. Hans Neumann's refreshing article on pica (Pediatrics, 46: 441). We should be grateful to him for adding spice to the pica problem. Any discussion which stimulates a reappraisal of one's prejudices is well worth reading.

It is easy for me to accept that chewing on hard substances throughout life promotes dental health. I am all for it, but I don't expect this habit to be generally accepted except by those types who become early morning joggers.
