Psychosocial Problems in Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis

Philip A. Cohen M.D.1

1 Department of Pediatrics, University of Washington, School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington 98105

I read with interest the report of Shwachman, et al. (46:335) in the September issue of Pediatrics.

Today most of our institutions are teaching the concept of treating the entire patient– especially those who are suffering from chronic diseases such as cystic fibrosis. This is evidenced by the establishment of comprehensive care clinics into our teaching programs. To my dismay, nowhere in their article did I find reference to the myriad of psychosocial problems which the CF patients and families experience.
