We are in an era of great sociological unrest and change. This has affected medicine considerably, but as yet in a miniscule fashion compared to what is in store in the relatively near future. Medicine has the opportunity of being the trail-blazer, the innovator or it can take the opposite tack and, when compelled, take a few reluctant steps at a time, trying to catch up with things fashioned by others.
The Academy of Pediatrics was founded as a progressive and forward looking group and dared to challenge tradition.
