RENAL ANOMALIES IN THE NEWBORN FOUND BY DEEP PALPATION

The policy of vigorous palpation of the abdomen during initial examination of 10,000 newborn infants was followed routinely with special emphasis on tracing the outline of the kidneys. Renal anomalies were suspected in 71 infants, and their presence later proved in 55 of these. Horseshoe kidney occurred most frequently, closely followed by unilateral renal agenesis. The ease of examining, the slight expenditure of time, and the relatively high incidence of discovered renal anomalies make this maneuver an important part of the routine examination of newborn infants.
