One may applaud the earnestness of the present authors in their conception of a "clinical pathology" for mental retardation syndromes as an aid to pediatric workers, but then one must admit with regrets that the work fails in all critical areas. Coursing over all major inborn metabolic errors, cytogenetic syndromes, and acquired detrimental occurrences to fetuses or infants, the book fails to settle on a creditable description of the central issues of any. Framed in a scientific format, the text nonetheless allows painful inaccuracies to be perpetrated in every section.
