Dr. Work's commentary on Pediatric Globalism (Pediatrics, 46:173, 1970), up to the last paragraph, stresses the point of teaching "total pediatrics" or "comprehensive care" to trainees.
His reasons are clearly stated and understandable up to that point, but from there on I lose his logic. He then says, because some physicians, those subspecialists who prefer to intensify their interest in certain areas, may not include the learning of "comprehensive care" in their armamentarium, perhaps we needn't teach this special area to them.
