Acute Airway Obstruction in Infectious Mononucleosis

Howard P. Gutgesell Jr. M.D.1

1 Department of Pediatrics, University of Rochester, School of Medicine, Rochester, New York

Sudden and complete airway obstruction occurred in a 16-year-old boy with tonsillar hypertrophy and pharyngeal exudate secondary to infectious mononucleosis. Clinicians caring for children should be aware of this possibility in the patient with dysphagia, drooling, a muffled voice, and dyspnea, even though objective signs of respiratory difficulty may be absent.
