The purpose of our publication was to augment the fragmentary data currently available for the growth of North American Negro children beyond infancy. The children in this study were from low income levels with an annual income less than $3,000 for a family of three. We characterized the children as normal and healthy in the sense that they were "free from any chronic and debilitating disease or congenital anomalies." According to Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary "healthy implies full strength and vigor as well as freedom from signs of disease"obviously these words may convery different shades of meaning depending upon the context of usage and the interpretation of the reader.
