Head Circumference Growth in North American Negro Children

Gerhard Nellhaus M.D.1

1 Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Assistant Professor of Neurology, University of Colorado School of Medicine, 400 E. 9th Avenue, Denver, Colorado 80227

The growth of maximal occipito-frontal head circumference in North American Negro children, as reported recently by Verghese, et al.,1 deviates significantly in early life from the patterns calculated by me on the basis of reports from the world literature since 1948.2 This variance (Fig. 1 and 2), in which the means (x) ± 2 SD (·) of the head circumferences of the Negro children are plotted on the international and interracial graphs published in Pediatrics,1 warrants additional attention and analysis.
