In Reply: Evaluation of Routine Examinations: Is the Private Practice of Pediatrics by the Pediatrician Ineffective?

Frederic P. Anderson M.D.1

1 Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Yale-University School of Medicine, 333 Cedar Street, New Haven, Connecticut 06510

Thank you for the opportunity of clarifying some of the points made in my article that have troubled Dr. Heller.

I hope that few readers of the article were led to feel that my conclusion was "that the private practice of pediatrics by the pediatrician (his italics) is ineffective." My premise is precisely the opposite: that because of the great value placed on the reception of the pediatrician's services by the public, all aspects of pediatric services must be carefully scrutinized in order to allocate them rationally and most efficiently.
