Letter To The Editor

Seymour Charles M.D.1 and Annemarie Shelness 1

1 50 Union Avenue Irvington, New Jersey 07111

Thank you for giving us the opportunity of replying to Dr. Johnson's remarks.

The omission immediately below the column heading "Annual Mileage" in the table referred to occurred in the printing.

Although Iowa may require the reporting of all accidents, it is doubtful if every scratch and bump is recorded.

Pupil mileage is difficult to ascertain. The National Safety Council (Accident Facts 1969) estimates it to be 40% of the total. The mileage recorded is the actual number of miles traveled by each vehicle; no attempt has been made to compute "passenger miles."
