How Safe is Pupil Transporatation

The January 1970 Supplement to Pediatrics1 was provocative enough to cause me to write a letter to the local school bus authorities decrying Iowa's bus accident record and safety regulations. This letter resulted in a chain of letters, and ultimately a reply from Arthur Roberts, Director of the Division of Transportation in the Iowa State Department of Public Instruction. The letter pointed out several difficulties which might arise from inappropriate interpretation of the data:
