An inexpensive dictionary of "the profusion of eponyms and descriptive synonyms used to designate syndromes and diseases" has long been needed to fill a gap in the physician's reference library. Although we may inveigh against the tidal wave of eponyms constantly entering medical literature, there is little any of us can do to stop this trend. Some would prefer that each syndrome be known solely by a descriptive term but this might well prove merely a Pyrrhic victory.
