Remission of Grade III Astrocytoma after Irradiation and Amphotericin B

M. Joyce Rubissow M.D.1

1 Division of Neurosurgery, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Oakland, California 94609

I would like to share an experience and receive comment regarding a child who has experienced an apparent remission of an astrocytoma grade III of the lower brain stem with amphotericin B.

This is an 11-year-old school girl with an inoperable tumor of the upper cervical cord and lower brain stem, diagnosed by open biopsy 6 months ago, and unresponsive to a prolonged course of radiation therapy. An atrioventricular shunt was performed 2 weeks after diagnosis because of increased intracranial pressure secondary to obstruction.
