Reduction of Phytohemagglutinin.— Induced Lymphocyte Transformation in Patients with Measles

Fireman, et al. noted in your journal that administration of live attenuated measles (rubeola) vaccine temporarily suppressed the recipients' cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity and the in vitro transformation of their lymphocytes by specific antigens. Lymphocyte transformation by the non-specific mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was not suppressed. We have also observed that PHA-induced transformation was not suppressed in the lymphocytes of 30 subjects given attenuated measles vaccine.

We have studied the relationship between chromosomal aberrations and viral infections since 1967 and have found that lymphocyte blastic transformation rate (BTR) and absolute mitotic cell number (MCN) decrease transiently during the course of measles.
