Letter To The Editor

Clement A. Smith M.D.

When we started the abstract system, in Volume 41, No. 1 (January), 1968, a commentary described the plan as follows:

"With the new year this journal alters, slightly, the form of its articles. Most apparent will be the beginning of each article with an abstract, to be prepared by the author. In that position the abstract will not only suggest to the hesitant reader what he may expect to find below, but it will also allow him to photocopy (or tear) from the issue the abstract together with the adjoining title, author's name, and other useful items, including the key words under which the author advises indexing what he has written.
