Light and Hyperbilirubinemia

J. L. De Heer M.D.1

1 Lago Hospital, Aruba, Netherlands Antilles

Dr. Thomas H. Milby, et al., of the California Department of Public Health1 described a significant (p. < .01) seasonal variation in the incidence of neonatal nonhemolytic unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia, observed in a hospital in a small, predominantly agricultural Californian community during a 4-year observation period (1963-1966). An excess of cases occurred during the fourth quarter of each of the 4 years reviewed, as compared with the other quarters of these years. A similar trend (p. < .5) was apparent in a nearby hospital during 2 of the 33 years reviewed (1964-1966).
