National Policy on Drug Abuse

Marc C. Gabel M.D., M.P.H.1

1 Program Technical Representative Peace Corps-Malaysia Jalan Broadrick Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The article, "Drug Abuse in Adolescence" by the Committee on Youth, gives a concise summary of the role pediatricians can play with their individual patients. What is left out, is the national role that pediatricians should play in influencing legislation that may well be harmful to this constructive role. By using repression rather than education, federal and state laws may well drive youths away from contacts with members of the society who might yet be able to work with them.
