TUBERCULOUS MENINGITIS DEVELOPING DURING THE COURSE OF CHEMOTHERAPY FOR PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS

John P. Lintermans M.D.1 and Victorine Seyhnaeve M.D.1

1 Department of Pediatrics, University Hospital of Lovanium, Kinshasa XI, Republic of Congo

A 3-year-old Negro boy developed tuberculous meningitis after almost 4 months of treatment with streptomycin, isoniazid, and prednisone for pulmonary tuberculosis. This complication has been described before in at least 9 instances. None of these previously reported patients apparently had a lumbar puncture before the meningitis became clinically evident. In our patient, the spinal fluid was examined 3frac12 months and 2frac12 months before the onset of the meningitis, and it was found to be entirely normal. Our patient is, we believe, the first documented case where this complication developed despite the addition of corticosteroids to the specific therapy.
