It is difficult to review Geoffrey Dawes's book without looking back to another volume, Barcroft's Researches on Perinatal Life, published in 1946. Seen in this perspective, the recent growth of fetal and neonatal physiology is particularly striking. In much of that growth, Dr. Dawes has been concerned, either as Director of the Nuffield Institute for Medical Research (and thus leader of a major investigating team), or-less directly-as a source of stimulation to a multitude of investigators elsewhere.
