Drug induced respiratory depression is a constant threat to the neonate whose mother has been sedated during labor. It should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of an altered respiratory pattern in a newborn. When the depression is severe, and there is a strong suggestion that it is drug induced, an exchange transfusion should be considered in an attempt to remove the noxious agents.
