John Thomson: Pioneer and Father of Scottish Paediatrics, by W. S. Craig. Edinburgh and London: E. and S. Livingstone Ltd., 1968, 96 pp., 21 s ($2.50)

Thomas E. Cone JR. M.D.1

1 Boston, Massachusetts

Of the triumvirate who created and ennobled British pediatrics, the names of two, Sir George Frederic Still (1868-1941) and Sir Thomas Barlow (1845-1945) are well-known; the third, Dr. John Thomson (1856-1926), is far less known, not only to the cisatlantic pediatrician but also to his transatlantic counterpart.

Fortunately, Professor Craig's short biography of John Thomson will introduce most readers for the first time to one of the greatest pediatricians of this century. The book is obviously a labor of love because the author-as did everyone else who knew Thomson-was deeply inspired by his gentleness, his kindness, and his ungrudging, unsparing, and unyielding efforts to improve the care and cure of children.
