It is but a short 8 years since Kempe and colleagues coined the term "the battered child syndrome." This was a major advance, for it captured both professional and lay attention and led within a remarkably short time to the implementation of reporting laws within all 50 states. Hardly any other piece of research can be said to have influenced social policy so effectively in such a short period of time. We are now presented in this edited book with an upto- date picture of the problem.
