One More Hazard: Plastic-backed Pads

Merritt B. Low M.D.1

1 Chairman, Committee on Accident Prevention, American Academy of Pediatrics

A report from Georgia mentions a case of suffocation in a 4-month-old infant, allegedly caused by one of the commonly used plastic-backed pads–in this case a "lochial" pad given to the mother on discharge from the hospital maternity floor, similar to the disposable diaper which has become so popular in the last few years.

Although recovery occurred in this particular case, the implications of this one case are ominous, and the Committee wishes to call this hazard to the attention of all physicians caring for infants.
