Diabetic pregnancy and its effect on the developing fetus represent a research field of such diversity that those who stay with it over a long period of time are most likely to make a worthwhile contribution free from the errors made by the opportunists who touch on it but briefly. The collection of large numbers of cases alone is no guarantee against the fallacies implicit in small series; but, when wide and deep experience is matched with honesty, perceptiveness and lucid expression it can result in authority.
