Letters to the Editor

Jerome O. Klein M.D., James E. Haddow M.D., and Lily M. Young M.D.

We do not have data to respond adequately to Dr. Nespole's concern for the 6-hour ampicillin dosage schedule in acute meningitis. However, it is of interest that, on the 6-hour schedule, ampicillin sterilized the spinal fluid of our patient although the hemophilus was not eradicated at the distal site and orbital cellulitis and bacteremia resulted.1

Dr. Pryles's remarks on the need for therapy tailored to the individual patient are appreciated and we thank him for reiterating these points as made in the discussion and summary of our paper.
