Lead Encephalitis as Cause of VI Nerve Palsy

Terril H. Hart M.D.1

1 Childrens Mercy Hospital, 1710 Independence Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri 64106

I would like to compliment Dr. Knox and his associates1 for separating an apparently benign clinical entity from an otherwise ominous group. With respect to the latter, I would like to add one unusual but important disease, namely, acute lead encephalopathy. Children so afflicated may present with unilateral VI nerve palsies and often will have an associated febrile illness. Although signs of increased intracranial pressure are often present, this is always so. Delay in diagnosis may frequently prove fatal.
