The use of prolonged nasotracheal intubation in the management of two cases of acute epiglottitis is described. Some of the advantages of intubation over tracheostomy are outlined. In any given clinical situation, the expected duration of respiratory disability and the amount of tracheobronchial secretion anticipated will influence the choice between nasotracheal intubation and tracheostomy.
