The commonly used methods for taking blood pressure, either by palpation of the artery or by auscultation of Korotkov's sound, cannot easily be applied in the very young. The importance of these measurements, however, has found general recognition as shown by the numerous methods and devices designed for this purpose. The most popular is the flush method originally described by Gaertner and later brought into more extensive use by Goldring. Between this simple method and the rather sophisticated instrument described by Currens is a variety of others. With these instruments, various cuffs have been used, either single occluding cuffs or two separate cuffs—one proximal occluding, the other distalsensory.
