I am writing you this letter to express the opinion of the Committee on Terminology of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists concerning the classification of newborn infants with respect to duration of gestation, birth weight, and intrauterine growth. The Committee agreed with several portions of the report, but disagreed with others. They agreed that the duration of gestation should be calculated from the first day of the last normal menstrual period. They also recommended that the use of completed weeks, rather than the rounding off to the nearest week, would be more definitive.
