An Unusual Complication of Retrograde Pyelography: Neuromuscular Blockade

ALAN K. PERCY M.D.1 and EDWARD C. SAEF M.D.2

1 National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness, Program Analysis, Building 31, Room 8A-05-A, Bethesda, Maryland
2 Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, California

This report describes the onset of respiratory paralysis 2 hours after retrograde pyelography with a contrast material containing 2.5% neomycin. Although calcium has been described as more effective in treatment of neomycininduced neuromuscular blockade, the condition responded promptly to intravenous neostigmine and positive-pressure respiration.
