Publication of the interesting report of relationship between erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) and the hemolytic anemia of infection by Fikrig, et al. raises some crucial points concerning the pathogenesis and, especially, the frequency with which hemolytic anemia develops in individuals with G-6-PD deficiency when exposed to infections or certain other noxious agents, such as aniline derivatives, nitrofurantoin, naphthalene, fava beans, etc.
