The 6 years since the first edition of this book have been marked by numerous laboratory and clinical studies which are included in this updated and carefully documented edition. The reader who takes the title literally may be surprised to find chapters on pathology, anemia, surgical emergencies, and infections. The explanation for this is stated by Doctor Abramson in his preface when he notes that resuscitation "represents only the initial step in the restoration of breathing.
