PKU, State Legislation, and Maltreatment of Children

I noted with interest Dr. Isabel P. Robinault's letter concerning mandatory PKU testing, published on page 147 of the July 1966 issue, Volume 38, of Pediatrics. In this letter she states,

There is no longer question about states' rights to protect a child from being battered physically (some 20 states now have this legal protection for children).

As of September 1965, 47 states had passed legislation dealing with the abused child (Committee Statement by the Committee on Infant and Pre-School Child, "Maltreatment of Children," Pediatrics, 37:377, 1966).
