Ethics and Placebos

The following resolution was adopted by the New England Society of Allergy, primarily through the efforts of Dr. Lewis Webb Hill.

The Placebo in Clinical Investigation

The double blind study when carried out with honesty and with consideration for patients is surely a legitimate and valuable procedure in clinical research. If employed in ways other than this, it does not come within the best traditions of the generally accepted doctor-patient relationship.

The patient's understanding of the placebo is the gist of the whole matter.
