UROCYTOGRAMS IN NORMAL CHILDREN AND VARIOUS ABNORMAL CONDITIONS

Chawalit Preeyasombat M.D.1 and Frederic M. Kenny M.D.1

1 Department of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

Urethral cytology was quantitated and the results analyzed statistically with the following new findings. Increased estrogen effect in prepubertal girls compared to male controls. Increased estrogen effect in postpubertal compared to prepubertal males. Estrogen effect was partially blocked by the agent or agents causing premature adrenarche. Depo-Provera produced a change in the cytology of girls with sexual precocity similar to that produced in adult subjects by progestational steroid administration. Non-nucleated cells, not previously quantitated in pediatric patients, varied inversely with increased estrogen effect.

In addition, the recently reported findings of increased estrogen effect in premature thelarche and adolescent gynecomastia were confirmed.
