The activity of galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase was determined in red cells from mothers and their newborn infants. The newborn infants' enzyme activity in the cord blood and for 48 hours thereafter was the same as that of their mothers at delivery; both were significantly lower than normal controls.
By 1n6 months postpartum the enzyme activity of both mothers and infants had increased as compared to their values at delivery, but they were still below the control values.
