The Handling of Soya agr-Galactosides by a Normal and a Galactosemic Child

V. SCHWARZ 1

1 Departments of Child Health, and Medical Biochemistry, University of Manchester, Manchester, England

The treatment of galactosemic children with soya preparations in place of milk relies on the complete inability of the body to hydrolyse agr-galactosides or to absorb galactose liberated from them by the intestinal flora. From this stipulation it follows that the demonstration of galactose absorption in a small number of subjects would confirm the desirability of avoiding foods containing agr-galactosides, while the proven inability of a few subjects to hydrolyse these compounds would not permit any generalizations.
