In two patients with the biochemical features of renal tubular acidosis, urine pH decreased appreciably following infusion of either a neutral (pH 7.4) 0.15 M solution of Na2HPO4/NaH2PO4 or 0.15 M Na2SO4. The fall in urine pH is interpreted as reSultillg from the non-reabsorbable nature of PO4= and SO4=. That the fall in urine pH is mediated by an increased lumen negativity is supported by the fact that concomitant with the decrease in urine pH, the urine concentration and rate of excretion of Cldecreased significantly.
