In regard to the article by S. Levin on page 135 of the July, 1965, issue of Pediatrics, it might be well to advise your readers that the phenomenon he mentions is unlikely to occur in the United States.
According to the FDA, Rhodamine B is not listed for use in foods in the United States. However, this dye may be used in drugs since it is provisionally listed for such use.
Under the circumstances, it is unlikely that physicians will encounter the red urine mentioned by Dr. Levin as being common in South Africa due to the use of this particular dye in foods and candies.
