Quantitative Data on Infants of Diabetics

PETER GRUENWALD M.D.1

1 Departments of Pathology, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland

Naeye's recent paper: Infants of Diabetic Mothers: a Quantitative, Morphologic Study, calls for comment pertaining largely to the significance of the quantitative data presented. Findings are based on 30 autopsies; in 4 of these the birth weight was below 80% of predicted values, and in 5 cases between 80 and 120%. It would have been particularly interesting to see an analysis of the latter 5 cases as they are comparable in birth weight with the author's controls.
