Almost 100% of beta hemolytic streptococci isolated from cases of streptococcal disease will remain viable on untreated cotton swabs for 1 week and over 90% for periods up to a month when dried and sealed in ordinary pill envelopes. Knowing this fact, the practicing physician can transport cultures for this organism without haste by mail or in his bag reliably, cheaply, and simply.
